Free Roofing Calculators: Pitch, Squares & Ventilation

Working tools for homeowners and contractors. Enter rise and run, a plan footprint, or attic area; read back the pitch ratio, roof angle, area multiplier, roofing squares and net free ventilating area — with the equation printed on every page.

Calculator suite

Roof pitch calculator

Rise over run to X:12 pitch, roof angle in degrees, and the pitch multiplier that converts a plan footprint to roof surface.

Calculate pitch

Roofing squares estimator

Footprint times pitch multiplier, divided by 100, with an optional waste factor so material takeoffs stay realistic.

Estimate squares

Attic ventilation (NFVA)

Net free ventilating area from the IRC 1/150 base ratio or the reduced 1/300 ratio, split into intake and exhaust targets.

Check NFVA

Methodology (short version)

Every calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. These are the same equations used for quick geometry checks:

  • Pitch ratio = rise ÷ run; shown as X:12 where X = (rise ÷ run) × 12
  • Angle = arctan(rise ÷ run), in degrees
  • Pitch multiplier = √(1 + (rise ÷ run)²) — roof surface ≈ plan footprint × multiplier
  • Squares = roof surface ft² ÷ 100, plus an optional waste percentage
  • NFVA = vented attic floor ft² ÷ 150 (or ÷ 300 where that ratio is permitted), split into intake and exhaust

Multipliers assume a simple plane roof. Hips, valleys, dormers and steep cutoffs change the real area, so treat every output as a planning estimate and verify on site.

When a calculator is not a bid

These tools measure geometry and common ventilation ratios. They do not include tear-off, disposal, underlayment upgrades, ice and water shield, flashing rebuilds, decking replacement, steep-slope premiums or permit fees. If a number looks far cheaper than a local quote, the gap is usually labour, access and code — not the square math. Use the results to ask better questions, then compare roofers on the National Roofing Directory.

FAQ

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface area. Material and labour are commonly quoted in squares, not in building footprint square footage.

How do I calculate roof pitch from rise and run?

Divide rise by run. For X:12 notation, multiply that ratio by 12. The angle is arctan(rise/run). The area multiplier is the square root of 1 plus (rise/run) squared.

Is a roofing calculator the same as a contractor bid?

No. Calculators estimate surface geometry and ventilation ratios. A bid prices the full job: tear-off, disposal, decking, flashing, underlayment, labour and permits. Always get an on-site inspection before buying materials or signing a contract.

What attic ventilation ratio should I start from?

The IRC base ratio is 1 square foot of net free ventilating area per 150 square feet of vented attic floor (1/150). The reduced 1/300 ratio applies only in specific cases: balanced high and low venting, or a Class I or II vapour retarder on the warm side of the ceiling in the cold climate zones. Confirm with your local building department.
